Privacy Policy
Effective: May 29, 2026
Who we are
Cruise Intel is a daily newsletter about the cruise industry. This policy explains what data we collect when you subscribe, how we use it, and the rights you have over it.
Cruise Intel is the data controller for this newsletter. We operate from the United States, with a business address at 1000 Brickell Ave, Ste 715, Miami, FL 33131.
For any privacy questions or requests, contact operator@cruiseintel.org.
Children
Cruise Intel is not directed to children under 18, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact us at operator@cruiseintel.org and we will delete it.
Data we collect
When you subscribe, we ask only for your email address. We also record the time you subscribed, the version of this policy you consented to, and how you arrived at the site.
Our service providers may process limited technical information as a byproduct of operating the site — such as IP address, browser and device type, referring URL, and request timestamps. This data is used to deliver the site, protect against abuse, and diagnose errors. We do not use it to build profiles or to identify you personally.
How we use your data
We use your email address to deliver the daily Cruise Intel brief, manage your subscription, process unsubscribes, maintain consent and suppression records, send service or policy notices, protect against abuse, and comply with legal obligations. We do not sell, rent, or share your email with third parties for their own marketing.
Aggregate engagement data (open and click counts at the audience level) is used to improve story selection and editorial quality. Where we publish or license findings drawn from aggregate subscriber data, we will not include findings based on audience segments small enough to identify individual subscribers.
The daily Sounding
Each issue includes a one-question reader poll we call the Sounding. If you choose to respond, we record your ranking of the day's options and whether you tell us you're a casual or experienced sailor (by number of cruises). We also derive a coarse location — your country and region (for example, your state or province) — from your connection's edge metadata at the moment you submit.
Sounding responses are anonymous. We do not ask for or store your name, email, or any account identifier; we do not store your IP address; and we do not use a third-party location service. Your responses are not linked to your newsletter subscription — connecting the two would require your separate, explicit consent, which we do not seek by default.
We use Sounding responses only in aggregate — to publish the ranked results in the newsletter and to understand reader sentiment over time. Any findings we publish or share are drawn from aggregate results, never from individual responses.
How long we keep your data
We keep your email address while you remain subscribed. If you unsubscribe, we may retain your address on a suppression list to ensure we do not email you again. Consent records and minimal account data may be kept for a reasonable period to demonstrate compliance with applicable law.
Legal basis
We process your data on the basis of your consent (GDPR Art. 6(1)(a)), captured at signup with a timestamped opt-in. You can withdraw consent at any time by unsubscribing — every email includes a one-click unsubscribe link.
Unsubscribing stops the daily brief. We may still send brief service messages where necessary to confirm your unsubscribe, respond to a privacy request, or comply with a legal obligation.
Service providers
We rely on a small number of service providers to operate the publication. Each has a defined, narrow role:
- Email delivery and audience management
- Website hosting and database storage
- Error monitoring and operational logging
Each provider is contractually limited to processing data on our instructions for these specific purposes. We do not share subscriber data with advertisers, analytics networks, or for any purpose unrelated to operating the publication.
International data transfers
Our service providers are primarily based in the United States and may process data in the U.S. or in other countries. Where personal data is transferred outside your country of residence, we rely on appropriate safeguards, such as Standard Contractual Clauses or equivalent mechanisms required by applicable law.
Your rights
You have the right to access the data we hold about you, correct any inaccuracies, request deletion of your records, withdraw consent, and object to processing. To exercise any of these, email operator@cruiseintel.org. We respond within 30 days.
If you are in the UK, EU, or EEA and believe we have not adequately addressed your concerns, you also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. We ask that you contact us first so we can try to resolve the issue directly.
California residents
If California privacy law applies to us, California residents may have additional rights, including the right to know what personal information we collect, the right to access and correct it, the right to delete it, the right to opt out of any sale or sharing of personal information, and the right not to be discriminated against for exercising these rights.
We do not sell or share personal information in the way California law defines those terms. To exercise any of these rights, email operator@cruiseintel.org.
Cookies and tracking
We may use privacy-preserving website analytics to understand aggregate site traffic. These analytics do not set advertising cookies or build profiles of individual visitors.
Our emails may include open and click tracking. Our email provider records when emails are opened and which links are clicked. We use this data at an aggregate level to understand engagement and improve editorial quality, never for behavioral advertising, cross-site tracking, or individual profiling.
Security
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect subscriber data. No system can be guaranteed to be fully secure.
Policy updates
If we make a material change to how we handle your data, we will notify you by email and ask you to re-consent before the change takes effect. Minor clarifications or non-material updates may be published here without notice; the effective date at the top reflects the most recent change.
